Pieter-Steph du Toit has solidified his place in rugby history by becoming a two-time recipient of the World Rugby Men’s 15s Player of the Year award.
The Springbok flanker earned the prestigious honour at Sunday’s Monaco awards, adding the 2024 title to his 2019 win.
Thirteen months after the Springboks defended their World Cup title in France, Du Toit surpassed fellow Springboks Eben Etzebeth and Cheslin Kolbe, along with Ireland’s Caelan Doris, to claim the highly esteemed honour.
The 32-year-old back-rower played a crucial role in Springbok’s successful 2024 campaign, which included their first Rugby Championship title since 2009.
Despite a shoulder injury that forced him to miss the final match against Wales, Du Toit contributed significantly to victories over Scotland and England earlier in November.
His journey to the awards in Monaco was not without challenges. After returning to South Africa for treatment on his injury, Du Toit experienced travel delays due to storms, leading to his wife accepting the award on his behalf before he arrived.
Du Toit joins Schalk Burger (2004) and Bryan Habana (2007) as South African recipients of the award and is the first to win it twice.
Globally, he stands among legends Richie McCaw, Dan Carter, and Beauden Barrett as one of only four players to achieve this feat.
His stellar performances also earned him a spot in the 2024 Dream Team, where he is joined by fellow Springboks Eben Etzebeth, Cheslin Kolbe, Ox Nche, Malcolm Marx, Damian de Allende, and Jesse Kriel.
A Stellar Year for the Springboks
South Africa’s dominance in 2024 extended beyond Du Toit’s individual achievement. The Springboks finished the year with 11 wins from 13 matches, losing only to Argentina and Ireland by a single point each.
They scored an impressive 57 tries and maintained their top world ranking, showcasing the depth of their squad.
SA Rugby President Mark Alexander praised the team’s achievements, highlighting the players’ dedication and resilience throughout a challenging yet rewarding season.
Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus echoed this sentiment, highlighting the squad’s collective effort.
“To have so many of our players feature in the awards is a testament to their hard work, and dedication to the team and the Springbok brand, and that’s what makes this such a special group,” Erasmus said.
The Springboks capped an exceptional year with a commanding 45-12 victory over Wales in Cardiff, further cementing their status as rugby’s dominant force.
Demonstrating unmatched depth and versatility, they have set the stage for continued success.
