US President-elect Donald Trump has announced that Elon Musk will co-lead a new White House department aimed at streamlining government operations.
According to reports, Musk will team up with former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to head the Department of Government Efficiency, or “DOGE.”
The role fulfills a promise Trump made to Musk, who endorsed Trump during his campaign.
Together, Musk and Ramaswamy are expected to lead initiatives to reduce government bureaucracy, eliminate unnecessary regulations, cut excessive spending, and restructure federal agencies—all key components of Trump’s “Save America Movement.”
Trump noted that the goals of DOGE have long been part of the Republican vision.
“To drive this kind of drastic change, the Department of Government Efficiency will provide advice and guidance from outside of government, and will partner with the White House and Office of Management & Budget to drive large scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach to government never seen before.”
He emphasised that the duo’s efforts aim to “free the economy” and make government truly accountable to “We the People.”
Their work is set to conclude by July 4, 2026, with the goal of delivering a leaner, more efficient government in time for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Trump also added that he has full confidence in their success.
