President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed 11 Ministers and Deputy Ministers to the National Conventional Arms Control Committee for a five-year term.

Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni will serve as chairperson, while Andries Nel, the Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, will take on the role of deputy chairperson.

These appointments are made under Section 5(1) of the National Conventional Arms Control Act of 2002.

According to Section 4 of the Act, the committee’s mandate is to implement government policy concerning the trade of conventional arms, establishing a legitimate, effective, and transparent control process that adheres to international law.

The committee is responsible for regulating the trade in conventional arms and safeguarding South Africa’s economic and national security interests.

Additionally, it seeks to build both national and international confidence in its control procedures and has the authority to conduct investigations and inspections related to arms trade within and outside the Republic, as stated by the Presidency.
