South Africans have long struggled with high fuel prices, but there is now a glimmer of hope.

Due to weak international oil prices, the latest data from the Central Energy Fund suggests that petrol prices could drop by R1.05 for 93 Unleaded and R1.12 for 95 Unleaded starting in October.

Diesel prices are also expected to decrease by R1.10 for 50ppm and R1.12 for 500ppm.

While these adjustments are not guaranteed, significant fuel price relief is anticipated for South Africans next month.

If these predictions hold, a litre of 95 Unleaded petrol will cost R20.28 at the coast and R21.07 in Gauteng, with 93 Unleaded priced around R20.74.

Both petrol and diesel prices will return to levels last seen in February 2022.

Over the past three years, local fuel prices have been highly volatile. In July 2022, 95 Unleaded petrol hit a record high of R26.90 at the coast before dropping to R22.81 by the end of the year.

In 2023, petrol prices fluctuated between R20.75 and R23.82. Coastal 95 ULP was R21.77 in January 2024, but rose by R2.93 to R24.70 in May.

Prices then fell by R3.30 over the next four months, making petrol slightly cheaper in September than in January. The future of fuel prices remains uncertain.

International oil prices have been weaker for most of September, influenced by poor economic data from major regions like the US, China, and Europe.

On September 26, Brent Crude oil was trading at $73.46 (R1,262), lower than its August average of $78.54 and July average of $83.55.

Additionally, the strong rand, which dipped below $17.20 on Thursday, has also contributed to the favorable fuel price outlook.
