According to Manchester City midfielder Rodri, players are on the verge of going on strike due to the increased number of games.
City are set to face Inter Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday. The new structure of the competition will see at least two more games before the knockout stage.
The club is also involved in the 32-team Club World Cup, which is scheduled for July of next year.
With the new Champions League and Club World Cup formats, City will play at least four more matches than previous season’s guaranteed fixtures.
Pep Guardiola’s side won the Club World Cup in December after only playing two games, but if they want to go all the way next summer, they’ll need to play three group games and four knockout matches.
Legal action against Fifa for its expanded game schedule was recently referred to as “inevitable” by the union for the top European league and global players, Fifpro.
Rodri’s comments came less than 24 hours after Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson spoke out against the schedule changes.
City defender, Manuel Akanji has also stated that due to the expanded schedule, he will have to retire at the age of 30 because of a shortage of breaks throughout the season.
