The family of former minister Pravin Gordhan revealed in a statement on Tuesday that he had been admitted to the hospital.
The announcement confirmed that Gordhan was receiving the best care available despite his bad condition.
Gordhan, who trained as a pharmacist, is also a former cabinet minister in finance, public enterprises, traditional affairs, and cooperative governance.
Gordhan’s health issues began in August 2023, when he became ill and was unable to appear before Parliament’s portfolio committee in Cape Town while acting as Minister of Public Enterprise.
He had written to the committee chairperson, Khayalethu Magaxa, to explain that he had been advised by his specialist not to travel.
Gordhan was scheduled to respond to allegations made by Kgothatso Thakudi, the suspended director-general of public enterprises.
According to Thakudi, Gordhan interfered in the process of selecting the Takatso Consortium as the highest bidder for a 51 percent stake in SAA, the national carrier.
This was the second time Gordhan had cancelled off a meeting scheduled to discuss the allegations levelled against him.
Furthermore, Gordhan has previously stated that he planned to focus on his personal well-being and health following the 2024 general elections and exit politics.
The family’s wish for privacy displays the severity of his illness.
The family plans to share any new information about Gordhan’s health.
