Former envoys and ex-military officers raised concern as demonstrators waved Russian flags.
Russia, an Eastern power embroiled in a cold war with the West, has been blamed for multiple unlawful changes of government in West African countries including Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, among others.
The defense chief went on to say, “For those of them flying flags, and there are a lot of them, they are children being forced to do so. We are following up with those who have sponsored them. Those are pushing them since, you know, flyers were also printed. We have identified certain areas, and we intend to take severe action against them.
“The President has made it plain that we must not allow anyone who seeks to undermine Nigeria’s peace and serenity.
“We are warning in unambiguous terms, and the President has also stated that we would not accept anyone flying any foreign flag in Nigeria… So no one should allow oneself to be used by anyone.”
