ABUJA, NIGERIA – The legendary Nigerian singer and actress Onyeka Onwenu has reportedly died at the age of 72.
She was said to have died on Tuesday evening at the Reddington Hospital in Lagos after collapsing at Mrs. Stella Okoli’s birthday party.
TheNiche reported that an eyewitness who was at the party confirmed the news.
“It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu performed at Mrs. Stella Okoli’s birthday today (Tuesday, July 30, 2024) and collapsed after her performance.
“She was taken to Reddington Hospital and didn’t make it,” said the eyewitness. However, at the time of going to press, the family of the deceased had not yet announced her death.
Onwenu will be known for her music albums such as In The Morning Light and Dancing In The Sun. She also starred in films such as Half of a Yellow Sun and Lions Heart, among others.
Who is Onyeka Onwenu?
OnBorn on January 31, 1952, Onwenu was a versatile artist whose career spanned four decades. She was an actress, journalist, politician and a well-known singer and songwriter. In her music, Onwenu mixed genres such as highlife, reggae and pop and often dealt with social and political issues.
Some of her best-known songs are One Love, Iyogogo and Ekwe. The late musician, who was affectionately called ‘The Elegant Stallion’ by the Nigerian press, was a former chairman of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture. In 2013, she was appointed Executive Director of the National Centre for Women’s Development.
