Old Mutual, an insurance and financial firm, has been dealing with a PR nightmare since a social media user’s post prompted chaos over the corporation allegedly not complying to a court order. On March 5, Sebabatso Molefi, a frustrated social media user, went viral for her post on X.
“Dear @OldMutualSA please advise why you are refusing to release my mother’s money even though a court order has been provided. You are in contempt of court and I am about to lose my cool right now.”
Molefi stated that Old Mutual was delaying her mother’s pension payments. The post had over 1.3 million views and 2800 reshares. Many X users then came forward in response to the post, complaining about Old Mutual and how the financial institution has rejected their claims over petty reasons.
In their initial response to Molefi, Old Mutual stated that it would look into the matter and that it would take them three working days. Molefi posted to X, expressing her anger towards their response.
“Their response is even more disgusting. The people they are saying will investigate and provide feedback were already in copy of all communication and I have sent them screenshots. Now we must wait another 3 days, not even for the money but for their feedback”.
Molefi and Old Mutual exchanged a number of emails, which were shared on Molefi’s X account. Eventually, the company issued a statement on X. They stated that the situation was delicate and concerned the financial matters of two people. The corporation further stated that they will meet with Molefi to resolve the issue because they did not want to discuss the matter in public.
Molefi announced on X that a meeting will be held with several prominent Old Mutual members. The scheduled meeting is for March 12.
