Tottenham Hotspur restored its hopes of finishing in the top four of the Premier League this Saturday with a 3-1 comeback victory at home against Crystal Palace, thanks to Timo Werner’s goal. The German former Chelsea forward scored from close range in the 77th minute to cancel out Eberechi Eze’s incredible free kick that had given Palace the lead.

Tottenham was suddenly revived and they took the lead three minutes later with a header from Cristian Romero, after having failed to create chances for the majority of the game. Captain Son Heung-min went and finished the job with a characteristically clinical finish. With the win, Tottenham moved up to 50 points from 26 games, two behind Aston Villa, and into fifth place on the table.

After two years without a goal in English football, Werner’s loan move to Tottenham was intended to instil some confidence back into him as that player who used to score goals for fulfilment. During a tedious first half in which Tottenham dominated possession by more than 80% but lacked the creativity to overcome resilient Palace, he came closest to opening the score.

Son’s quick pass found Werner, but the German attempted to round Palace keeper Sam Johnstone, who stopped his shot. With more energy, Son opened the second half by shooting against the foot of the post following a cutback by Dejan Kulusevski. However, it was Palace that took the lead in the fifty-ninth minute.

Brennan Johnson, a substitute, gave Tottenham the much-needed energy they needed. After demonstrating remarkable effort to seize the ball down the right, he sidestepped a dubious tackle to slip a pass across the box that Werner sidefooted home. After Romero nodded in a lovely lobbed cross from James Maddison, Son broke through to score his 13th league goal of the year, demoralising Palace.
