MPUMALANGA – A 27-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the Masoyi Magistrates’ Court after she was arrested by the Nelspruit-based Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team and members of the National Credit Regulator at Masoyi policing area on 30 May 2022 on charges of contravening the National Credit Act.
The suspect was arrested during the search and seizure operation following information about the suspect who is operating an illegal cash loan business that is not registered with the National Credit Regulator. When the team executed the search warrant at her premises; bank cards, South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) grant cards, and identity documents of clients as well as cash were found and seized.
During preliminary investigation, it was established that the suspect was retaining clients’ bank cards to secure payments on their cash loans. These cards were illegally kept in order to ensure that clients pay back their dues monthly with inflated interests.
The suspect was arrested and charged at Masoyi police station pending her court appearance on Wednesday, 01 June 2022.
