CAPE TOWN – Cape Town police said on Wednesday that it believed a syndicate was behind the smuggling of cocaine disguised as chocolates into the Mother City.
This follows the arrest of four people at the Cape Town International Airport and the confiscation of drugs with an estimated street value of close to R4 million.
The latest arrest of a 40-year-old woman from Johannesburg happened at the airport on Wednesday. She had just arrived on a flight from the Middle East.
“She was found in possession of 3 kg of cocaine with an estimated street value of R1.2 million. Once charged, she will make a court appearance in Bellville on a charge of dealing in drugs,” said police spokesman Andre Traut.
On Tuesday another woman was arrested after customs officials found her in possession of 2.9 kilograms of cocaine worth around R1.1 million. The customs officials found the cocaine hidden in multiple chocolate containers.
Another arrest was made at the airport on Monday when two suspects were caught with 3.8 kilograms of cocaine with an estimated value of R1.5 million.
“We have reason to believe that the suspects are linked to the same syndicate using the same method of poorly concealing the contraband in chocolate packaging,” said Traut.
“We are pleased with the outcome of the latest interventions at the airport and deem the arrests as a major blow to the drug trade.”
