OHANNESBURG – The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says it’s dealing with Matthew Theunissen’s Facebook post.
Theunissen has since apologised for his comments – insisting he is not a racist.
The commission said there’s still a long way to go in the fight against racism.
“Our country is going through an evolution from a very racist past, so it’s not like we going to arrive at an event were we are no longer racist, we are all unlearning racism as we go along, it is of course a major issue for us it’s something we deal with every day at the commission,” said SAHRC spokesperson, Gail Smith.
“We do the best that we can as the Human Rights Commission to educate people through our outreach work and our clinics about the power of racism, about human rights and above all every South African has a right to dignity. I think that it’s an ongoing process.
“I don’t think that a country wakes up and say oh we are no longer racist, I think we just have to look at all the established democracies in the world, the developed world that’s still dealing with racism,” Smith said.
Racial tensions have been the subject of debate across social media.
The ANC in the Western Cape slammed a Rhodes Must Fall movement leader who refused to tip a waitress in Observatory, Cape Town.
Ntokozo Qwabe later wrote on his Facebook page about the experience which led the white waitress to cry.
The waitress apparently received thousands when sympathisers raised the money.
