JOHANNESBURG – The largest mall ever built in a single phase in South Africa has opened on Thursday. The Mall of Africa, located in Midrand, is expected to draw thousands of shoppers from existing malls in the northern parts of Johannesburg. The project’s value is R5-billion. Excited shoppers had already queued from the 6am inside the mall waiting for stores to open but a number of the shops were reportedly not yet open.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura was expected to officially open the mall on Thursday.

The mall’s opening caused heavy rush-hour traffic on Thursday morning, with cars backed up from the Allandale Road off-ramp.

There was a heavy police and metro police presence in the vicinity on the opening morning.

Both law enforcement agencies said their presence was merely a precautionary measure for safety and traffic.

The mall – is the biggest retail centre on the continent – is expected to accommodate over 300 stores. It also has 24 entrances.
