Gauteng parents who’ve applied to have their children enrolled in Grade 1 and 8 next year have seven days in which to accept the school at which their children have been placed or risk forfeiting the space.

Briefing the media on Sunday, Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says that from Thursday, parents will receive SMSes to accept or reject the offer.

The department has received over 255 000 applications through the online admissions process.

“We just need you to accept that we’ve given you this space. Just indicate that I’m not accepting so that we can give that offer to another parent,” says Lesufi.

Lesufi says learners whose required documents were not submitted have not been placed. He says there are 4000 applicants for Grade 1 and 3000 applicants for Grade 8 who did not submit documents.

“We are also using the applications that we have received to determine the areas in which we need to build or expand schools. There is a pattern where parents are moving into certain communities and there is an urgent need for us to build schools in those areas,” says Lesufi.

Matric exams for 2020

Lesufi says matric examinations will start on November 5, 2020 and will run through to December 15, 2020, while marking will take place from January 14 to 22, 2021.

Matriculants will be writing along with those writing supplementary examinations from 2019, as well as adults who want to write their matric.

Lesufi says in order to adhere to social distancing, the department has approached various other venues and employed around 12 000 invigilators.
