JOHANNESBURG – Police on Thursday urged jobseekers to be cautious when applying for advertised vacancies that require applicants to pay before they can get the job.
South African Police Service spokesman Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said there were a number of cases under investigation regarding such adverts.
Mbele said victims had laid complaints that they had been defrauded.
“Suspects are using the same modus operandi. They will ask people to deposit a certain amount of money to get a job, several people have been defrauded in the same manner.”
Mbele warned against responding to adverts that request jobseekers to “pay to get a job”.
“There are no jobs where you will be required to pay a certain amount of money to be placed.
“We urge the community to inform the police if someone wants them to pay certain amount of money to be listed.”
