DURBAN – The Democratic Alliance (DA) in eThekwini was set to table a motion of no confidence against eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede on Wednesday at the city council meeting.
During the full council sitting at the City Hall on Wednesday, DA caucus leader in eThekwini Nicole Graham, will bring forward the motion on charges of racketeering, money laundering, and fraud that she was facing and this meant she was not fit to hold office.
The DA would be banking on the internal divisions within the African National Congress (ANC) as well as the support of smaller parties at the eThekwini council.
However, Graham said she submitted an intention to move the motion on July 17, two weeks before the full council sitting.
“The Speaker acknowledged that the item had been received and later said that all substantive motions are regulated by the rules of order by-law. To date, he has not communicated why the motion was disallowed or any other details. He also refused to explain why in council,” she said.
Graham said if there was some kind of procedural issue, Mapena should have responded accordingly.
Meanwhile, the ANC was also expected to announce its decision on Gumede’s fate soon after its KwaZulu-Natal provincial executive committee meeting next month.
