Thohoyandou – We’re deeply saddened by the tragic and sudden passing of three Mafoko Security Officers who were involved in an accident in the evening of Wednesday 08 August 2018. An accident involving a Toyota Quantum commuting sixteen Mafoko Security Officers to the University of Venda happened on the Sibasa-Thohoyandou road about 3 kilometers from the University of Venda Campus. The Toyota Quantum was coming from Sibasa when the driver failed to negotiate a curve and drove over the pavement and hit two oncoming vehicles, Audi and Toyota D/cab and caught fire. According to an eyewitness, the Toyota Quantum driver lost control as a result of a tyre burst and drove into oncoming traffic traveling from Thohoyandou.

Three people were killed and one sustained serious injuries while seven were treated and released with minor injuries in this horrific accident. The driver of the Toyota Quantum survived the crash. The rest are still in Tshilidzini hospital.

One of the deceased passengers was trapped in while the other deceased victim was found to have been ejected from the Toyota Quantum they were traveling in. The injured persons of all vehicles involved in the accident were treated by staff from Thohoyandou EMS before they were transported to Tshilidzini hospital for further medical treatment. The driver of the Audi was among those injured while the D/Cab driver was not hurt.

Expressing deep sadness, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, and Principal, “we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of the Security Officers who passed away. We join them in mourning their loss and wish them strength during this difficult time” says Prof Jan Crafford.

Prof Crafford further said “We are deeply saddened by this loss as it occurred when the Toyota Quantum was commuting the security officers to the University for a night shift. We wish those in the hospital a speedy recovery. This is indeed a very painful time for both the University of Venda and Mafoko Security Company.”

Mafoko Security Company was temporarily appointed by the University of Venda from Friday 03 August 2018 to Sunday 12 August 2018 to supplement the University security for the protection of University property during the student protest action.
