The African National Congress Women League (ANCWL) in the North West has rallied behind embattled North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo. They held a media-briefing in Mahikeng where they said Mahumapelo is a victim of hatred by those who want to advance their interests.

The league says they are happy with Mahumapelo’s leadership in government. “There is nothing be feared” with cabinet’s decision to place the trouble-torn North West province under administration in terms of section 100 of the constitution.

Deputy Provincial Secretary of the league Bitsa Lenkopane however was defensive in responding to most of the questions posed by the media.

“Remember Section 100 is not starting in North West it was long time in Limpopo, it went to other provinces, so you get embarrassed when you do not know what it means and you get more and more focused when you understand it because you now say now the Laws that i have made in the conference are now getting, we knew as the ANC that we might need intervention at any level and that is why we had Section 100 so we are not embarrassed.”

Political analyst from University of the Free State, Dr Sethulego Matebesi says, the introduction of Section 100(1) of the Constitution in the North West province shows a commitment by  national government to deal with corruption.

Dr Matebesi says, despite this, service delivery will continue.

“It will be business as usual, those that are under their employ of the government, will continue their work but the fact of the matter is certain decision will be taken at the higher level which is national level. And one of the far most implication of this move it goes beyond the North West province. This is a huge confidence buster and indication, a demonstration that the government of the day is serious when it comes to corruption.”
