Pretoria – The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) has appointed new heads for its Gauteng and Western Cape units.
Major General Prince Mokotedi has been appointed as the new head of the DPCI — known as the Hawks — in Gauteng, while General Nombuso Portia Khoza will head the unit in the Western Cape.
Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said Mokotedi brings a wealth of investigation experience, having been in the investigation environment for quite a while.
“Having worked as a forensic investigator and the Director of Integrity Management at the National Prosecuting Authority, as well as the Director for Monitoring and Analysis at the Secretariat for Safety and Security, Mokotedi has gathered enough experience to keep criminals at bay in Gauteng,” said Mulaudzi.
Malaudzi, however skipped facts a lot of people have not forgotten, that Moketi is a man that has unfinished inquiry issues. The NPA in 2014 appointed a fact finding commission headed by retired Constitutional Court Judge Zak Yacoob to investigate the conduct of some senior officials and the existence of political interference.
Mokotedi was then served with the charge sheet relating to his disciplinary hearing. Mokotedi then submitted a handwritten resignation to the chief executive officer. ”Mokotedi is now unlikely to face a disciplinary hearing as his resignation was served with immediate effect.
According to a Sapa report in 2014 on Mokotedi’s resignation, he was suspended after a document on former prosecutor Glynnis Breytenbach was leaked to the media. Mokotedi denied leaking it. A day before his suspension, The Star carried a report on the IMU document which recommended that Breytenbach be criminally charged for corruption, misconduct, conflict of interest, fraud, and racketeering.
In the unit’s report, Breytenbach is accused of soliciting a loan of $1 million (about R11m at the time) from businessman Nathan Kirsh, a complainant in two cases she was prosecuting. Breytenbach is also accused of accepting a R6.3m donation from Kirsh through the FW de Klerk Foundation towards legal fees in her labour dispute with the NPA.
In April 2012, Breytenbach was suspended from the NPA and later faced a lengthy disciplinary hearing on 15 charges, which included failing to act impartially while investigating the Kumba Iron Ore Sishen and Imperial Crown Trading mining rights issue. Why then would a man as such be made to take a leading post in a top secret organization, knowing he is not so secret.
Khoza as one of the head, has worked as a senior State advocate at the National Prosecuting Authority. The Organised Crime unit in KwaZulu-Natal also has a new head in Brigadier Thembeka Dube. She has over 29 years’ experience as an investigator. The National Head of the Hawks, Lieutenant General Mthandazo Ntlemeza, has congratulated the newly appointed provincial heads, saying their appointments will go a long way in ensuring that the DPCI realises its mandate in those provinces.
