Mtunzini High Court convicted and sentenced Mduduzi Luthuli (35) and Simiso Ndebele (32) to life imprisonment for murder and 15 years imprisonment for robbery with aggravated circumstances. A further 10 years was imposed for possession of unlicensed firearm and two years for possession of ammunition to Mduduzi Luthuli. This emanates from a murder case that took place at Ezimangweni area, Nongoma where the accused was implicated.
On 5 December 2015 at 08:30, seven stokvel members were in the house busy counting stokvel money when they were approached by two suspects at gunpoint. The victim, Thoko Dorack Hlatshlwayo (57) was shot and killed and the suspects took R 78 000 from the house and fled the scene. Community members assisted and gave chase where one accused was apprehended and handed over to the police. The police traced the second accused and was arrested two days later after crime was committed. He was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Both accused were charged with murder, robbery and a further possession of unlicensed firearm was added to Luthuli.
KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa welcomed the sentence handed down to both accused and praised the detectives for their determination in solving the case. “I also praised the community members for assisting in apprehending the accused and hand him to the police. This shows that community is involved in the fight against crime. We need need more community participation and join community police forums which is a statutory body that fights crime”, he said.
