Yesterday, Vryheid Regional Court convicted and sentenced Siyabonga Mashazi, 31, to a total of 25 years imprisonment for two counts of rape and robbery that he committed in March 2015 at Luneburg area, Paulpietersburg. Mashazi accosted a 49-year-old woman whilst she was walking on the road and grabbed her into the nearby bushes. He threatened her with a knife and raped her. The victim managed to flee and she went to Paulpietersburg police station where she reported the incident. A case of rape was opened.
An hour later, on the same day, Mashazi accosted a 23-year-old woman. He also grabbed her into the bushes at knifepoint. He raped her and robbed her of an undisclosed amount of cash. She managed to run away from him and reported the incident to police. A case of rape was opened at Paulpietersburg police station. Both cases were transferred to Vryheid Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for investigation. The investigating officers conducted a successful investigation which led to the arrest and prosecution of the accused. He was sentenced to ten years imprisonment for each rape and five years’ imprisonment for robbery. The determination by the Vryheid FCS detectives to solve the cases is commended.
