The Mtunzini police made a breakthrough on a syndicate that is terrorising the Unizulu students at their cottages at Dlangezwa area. This follows a spate of house robberies in the area, the members conducted an intelligence driven operation in the early hours of this morning where they arrested a total of five suspects believed to be linked to a number of house robberies in the area. They were found in possession of suspected stolen goods such as TV sets, laptops, clothing, cellphones and two unlicensed pistols believed to be used during robberies. The arrested suspects will appear in the Mtunzini Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 30 January 2017 facing house robbery, possession of stolen goods, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Investigation continues and more charges could be added.
On 23 January 2017 at about 23:00 four victims were in their cottage at KwaDlangezwa area when the suspects came in armed with firearms. It is alleged that they entered the room and demanded cash as well as other items from the victims. Cellphones, cash and other items were taken and the suspects fled the scene on foot. A case of house robbery was opened at Mtunzini police station.
The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner commended the members for their outstanding which resulted in the arrest of the suspects. “Our detectives will work around the clock to establish whether these suspects can be linked to any other house robberies in the area. We have experienced a number of house robberies at Dlangezwa area where students’ cottages were targeted. Recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were used in any other crime in the province,” he said.
