Six people were left injured this morning, two critically, when a taxi rear-ended a truck on the N4 Highway in Montrose, Mpumalanga.
ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived on the scene and found both the truck and taxi in the middle of the intersections. The entire front-end of the taxi had been completely smashed in the collision.
Upon closer inspection, paramedics discovered two people lying trapped inside the front of the vehicle. Both were found in a critical condition. Four other patients were found on the scene with moderate injuries.
Rescue services utilised the jaws-of-life equipment to free both patients from the vehicle, an operation lasting 45 minutes.
Once freed, paramedics treated the patients and provided them both with advanced life support interventions. Once treated, one patient was airlifted by the Provincial helicopter while the second was transported by ambulance. Both patients were transported to Rob Ferreira Hospital.
The four other patients were treated for their injuries and were thereafter transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
The driver of the truck stated that his brakes apparently failed, causing the collision.
Local authorities were on the scene to investigate further.
