A major raid on counterfeit goods in Fordsburg led to the arrest of 24 Pakistani nationals.
The operation, conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in collaboration with various agencies, targeted a shopping mall and resulted in the seizure of counterfeit items valued at over R2 million.
Authorities uncovered over 8,000 counterfeit products, including cellphones and other electronics.
During the raid, officials from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) also confiscated non-compliant devices.
Among the suspects arrested, 23 face charges for violating the Immigration Act, while one was specifically detained for dealing in counterfeit goods.
SAPS spokesperson Amanda van Wyk emphasised that the operation aims to protect consumers and legitimate businesses from the risks associated with illegal trade.
“The SAPS, along with its partners, is committed to eradicating the illegal trade of counterfeit goods to safeguard consumers, legitimate businesses, and the economy of this country.”
The raid is being recognised by authorities as a significant step forward in the fight against counterfeit operations in Gauteng.
