Cape Town – It’s all become a bit messy over the last couple of weeks, but on Wednesday the bidding wars will come to an end when World Rugby reveals the hosts for the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
That announcement is expected to be made at around 15:00 (SA time).
South Africa, who have hosted the global showpiece just once in 1995, are overwhelming favourites to win after they were named as World Rugby’s official recommendation following an independent audit last month.
While that recommendation by no means secures South Africa the tournament, it is believed that it will go a long way towards swaying the World Rugby Council which is tasked with casting its votes on Wednesday.
There are 39 votes, with a simple majority securing the World Cup.
The World Rugby recommendation had left France and Ireland, in particular, seething.
Irish Rugby argued, in the form of a letter to World Rugby, that the findings in the report did not accurately represent the risks that would come with hosting a World Cup in South Africa.
World Rugby has since dismissed Ireland’s complaints, and all that is left now is to have the vote and confirm the 2023 hosts.
South African rugby needs some good news, and hopefully they will get some on Wednesday afternoon.
