The hearings into the allegations of state capture in South Africa will begin on Monday morning in Parktown Johannesburg.
Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo will chair the commission of inquiry which seeks to outline how some people with close ties with former president Jacob Zuma unduly benefited from state resources.
The inquiry follows former public protector Thuli Madonsela’s 2016 state of capture report in which she singled out the controversial Gupta family, and various government officials.
The highly-anticipated inquiry will bring various key witnesses including former deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas and former ANC member of Parliament Vytjie Mentor.
Weekend reports say Justice Zondo has also written to Zuma to request him to testify.
Various people from a wide section of the society have largely welcomed the start of the inquiry.
The inquiry is expected to run for two years.
Spokesperson of the inquiry Mbuyiselo Stemela says: “I can confirm that public hearings are commencing on the 20th of August. The hearings will take place on Hill on Empire 4th floor auditorium which is based in Parktown Johannesburg. The opening day, the chairperson, the deputy chief justice will open proceedings and then thereafter the statements each will be led by Paul Pretorius and followed by some presentations of reports by Thandi Norman.”
