The Pan African Women’s Organisation (PAWO), one of the largest women-led formations on the African continent, lends its full support to the women of Palestine. In particular PAWO lends its solidarity to the upcoming women’s march taking place in Gaza on Tuesday the 3rd of July.
people who, during the darkest days of colonialism, provided us African nations with resources, military training and other forms of support in our various anti-colonial struggles. Besides, when we see our fellow Palestinian mothers and sisters, we see ourselves.
We condemn the terror that is being unleashed by the Israeli regime on the women of Palestine who bear the brunt of Israel’s dehumanisation. The image of the young Palestinian nurse, Razan Najar, who was shot dead in June at the age of 21 years old, is still fresh in our minds.
We reiterate our call for African states and the international community to increase the sanctions against and isolation of the Israeli regime. The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement is making huge strides from churches divesting from Israel to artists cancelling their Israeli gigs. This momentum must be maintained. The combination of protest by Palestinians on the ground and international pressure can bring a just peace to the region.
Finally, PAWO is saddened by the passing of Jewish Israeli lawyer, Felicia Langer, who died on 21 June 2018, at the age of 87. Langer was one of the first Jewish Israeli lawyers to assist Palestinians in cases involving Israeli land confiscation, house demolition, deportations, and torture. Langer also described Israel as an Apartheid state, something that we agree with.
