Emergency services say five people were killed and 15 seriously injured in a collision between a minibus taxi and car.
The two collided on Nigel Road just outside Vosloorus on Gauteng’s East Rand.
EMS spokesperson William Ntladi says one of the people who died was the driver of the sedan who was burnt to death when his car caught fire.
Ntladi says scores of people were still trapped under the taxi itself as it was on its roof.
Emergency services personnel had to extinguish the blaze and at the same time use the jaws of life to free the injured.
He says: “We had about 15 patients in total and about nine of them were in a critical condition. While the remaining six were in a serious but stable condition.”
The cause of the crash is still unknown but it is under investigation by the Ekurhuleni metro police officers.
