The body of the last missing miner at the Sibanye-Stillwater mine’s Ikamva shaft, near Westonaria, west of Johannesburg has been recovered. This brings the total number of fatalities to five.
The miners died after succumbing to heat and gas exposure in one of the shafts which had been deemed by the mine as a no-go area.
Nearly 40 miners have lost their lives at mines across the country so far this year. Sibanye-Stillwater spokesperson, Thabisile Phumo says his body was brought to surface on Thursday morning.
“We can confirm that we found our fifth colleague who was unfortunately declared deceased in one of the shafts underground and his body was brought to surface this morning. We wish to send our condolences to his family and his colleagues who had been working with him.”
