Workers at Shoprite to hold one-day strike on Friday

JOHANNESBURG – Workers at South Africa’s Shoprite will go on a one-day strike on Dec. 22 to protest a change in working hours, their union representative said on Wednesday. However there has been no direct comment or confirmation regarding the strike from Shoprite, South Africa.

Most of the workers of the chain store around the country are complaining about their poor remuneration as compared to the numbers of hours they put into their work. One of the branch manager in Centurion believes the strike would not hold as business is at its highest peak and it could affect sales plan for the festives.

About 30,000 workers will down tools during the strike, Mike Tau an official of the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union said. Tau said a full-blown strike would follow if the company failed to change the working conditions.
