Pretoria – South Africa is again paying homage to one of its struggle heroes, former South African Communist Party (SACP) General Secretary and uMkhonto weSizwe commander, Chris Hani.
President Jacob Zuma will today address the annual Chris Hani Wreath Laying Ceremony.
The ceremony, which will honour and celebrate the life and legacy of one of the country’s most respected struggle stalwarts, will be held at Elspark in Boksburg.
The ceremony will be held under the theme “Living the Legacy of Chris Hani”, the Presidency said on Monday.
“As part of the ceremony, President Zuma will also unveil a plaque on the declaration of the grave of Mr Hani and the Chris Hani Memorial and Walk of Remembrance as a National Heritage Site, as declared by the Department of Arts and Culture. “
Hani was a former uMkhonto weSizwe commander, who played a significant role during the liberation struggle and democracy.
He was assassinated on 10 April 1993 outside his home in Dawn Park in Boksburg.
The month of April has since been named Chris Hani Month by the City of Ekurhuleni.
