JOHANNESBURG – Classes will continue as usual at the University of Cape Town and Wits University on Monday.
That’s as some students threatened protest action at universities countrywide.eNCA has not yet been able to get confirmation from other tertiary institutions as to whether they will remain open.
The Pan Africanist Student Movement of Azania (Pasma) has threatened not only to shut down universities, but the entire country if its demands for free higher education are not met.
Pasma is calling for a zero-percent increase and for tuition fees to be ultimately dropped.
But Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande has refuted claims that government has recommended fee increases.
He says the 2017 university fees have not yet been pronounced.
At the same time, the ANC says the moratorium on fee increases should stay in place until all outstanding issues are resolved.
