ANC wins first declared council in Gauteng

PRETORIA – The African National Congress (ANC) has won the first declared council in Gauteng.

Results for another nine councils including the closely contested City of Johannesburg and City of Tshwane are still outstanding.

The ANC has won control of the Lesedi Local Municipality with 62.08 percent and 16 seats in the council. The Democratic Alliance (DA), has won 23.77 percent and six seats and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have won only 10 percent and three seats.

The municipality is located in the Sedibeng District Municipality and Heidelberg is the seat of the municipality. The victory for the ANC may be of concern to the party as compared to the 2011 election, the ANC has decreased in support by almost 7 percentage points.

In 2011, the ANC won the municipality with 70.87 percent.

By 9.30am on Thursday, a total of 27 councils had been declared with about 10 percent of the total still outstanding.
