JOHANNESBURG – The first thing that you’ll probably find out about Collen Maine, the newly elected president of the ANC Youth league, when you put his name into a Google search is that he is the current MEC for local government and human settlements in North West province.
Maine was elected to the top position unopposed at this past weekend’s congress in Midrand.
The new President of the recently floundering arm of the ANC has been an MEC in the North West government since June 2014 after the national general elections.
Here are five other things you should know about Maine:
1. He’s a Christian
During the ANC youth league congress Maine quoted the Bible during his speech.
Maine was reportedly referring to the youth league’s past ill discipline and he promised that this behavior will not continue.
He quoted the Old Testament, specifically Exodus chapter 20, verse 12.
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you.”
2. Maine was an MP
Before becoming an MEC, Maine was a member of Parliament representing the ANC. He joined the National Assembly in 2009 and served on a number of committees.
May 2009 – August 2014: Delegate at the National Council of Provinces
August 2013 – January 2014: Member of the select committee on economic development
January 2014 – April 2014: Member of the select committee on trade and international relations
April 2014 – May 2014: Member of the defence joint committees
Maine then left Parliament to become an MEC in the North West provincial government.
3. He’s a businessman
During his five years as an MP Maine declared that he was a director/partner or had financial interests in six different companies: Mokone Mokgoloko Consulting and Projects; Southern Ambition 285; Sekukune Trading; Sign and Seal Trading 193 and Nokone Mokgoloko Consulting.
4. Maine’s had some relationship problems
In December 2014, the Sunday Sun published a story about Maine’s wife Kelebogile smashing all the glass windows of a love nest with rocks and a steel pipe after she found him in bed with another woman.
Maine took the paper to the Press Ombudsman but his complaint was dismissed. He appealed this decision but the Press Council dismissed this too.
5. He’s on Twitter
Maine only joined Twitter last week. His first tweet on Saturday 5 September from the handle @CollenMaine was a retweet.
