On 12 January 2016, Port Shepstone Public Order Police, Ugu South Task Team and uMzimkhulu Crime Intelligence conducted an intelligence driven operation which resulted in the arrest of two suspects at Meyi area, Ibisi near Umzimkhulu. The men were found in possession of five unlicensed firearms, 67 assorted live rounds of ammunition, magazine, two holsters and police uniform. The recovered firearms were 9mm pistol, two special revolvers and a shotgun. One of the arrested suspects is a former police Captain who was attached to Stock Theft Unit. The suspects aged 54 and 56 years are expected to appear in Umzimkhulu Magistrates Court today, 14 January 2016 facing possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition charges.
Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni welcomed the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of firearms. All these firearms will be taken for ballistic tests to check if they were used in any other crimes in the country. We will not allow our community members to be terrorized by the criminals and it is very important that the public to stand up and report those involved in criminal activities,” she said.
