Suspect fatally wounded during a shoot-out with police in Vaal Rand

Police have seized two unlicenced firearms during a shoot–out with suspects who had robbed a small business at Ennerdale yesterday afternoon. One of the three suspects was fatally shot and police also recovered 23 cellphones. Cases of armed robbery, attempted murder and possession of stolen goods and unlicensed firearms are being investigated.

Three suspects allegedly confronted a Tanzanian national at his small business in Ennerdale. He was pointed with firearms and robbed of cash, cell phones and a bag. As the suspects were fleeing from the scene, members of the community who had witnessed the robbery chased after them and alerted the police. As the police joined the chase, the suspects fired shot at them and police returned fire. One of the suspect was fatally shot and the other was arrested. Two firearms, a revolver and a pistol with several rounds of ammunition, were recovered. A third suspect managed to escape and police have launched a manhunt for him.

This follows another incident on Tuesday at Rothdene in Meyerton where two suspects who followed two elderly (62 and 63) people home after withdrawing money from the bank were arrested following a shoot-out with the couple’s son. One was fatally shot and the other was wounded. Two unlicenced firearms and stolen vehicle were recovered. The elderly couple were not injured but only robbed of cash.

It is alleged that four suspects who were driving a stolen vehicle, a Dodge with false registration number, stopped behind the victims as they were entering their home. A hand bag with cash was grabbed from the victims. The victim’s son who was inside the house heard a commotion. When he went out, he was confronted by the suspects and a shoot-out between him and the suspects ensued. Two of the suspects were shot and the other two managed to escape leaving their vehicle behind. At a later stage it was discovered that they were driving a vehicle stolen at Sandton earlier this month. A wounded suspect is under police guard at the Vereeniging Hospital.
