Maritzburg United attacking midfielder Mondli Cele died on Saturday night following a car crash, according to the club’s chairman.
Cele, who made eight appearances for the Team of Choice this season, reportedly lost control of his car in heavy rains soon after their thrilling 3-3 draw with Orlando Pirates.
As statement was posted on the club facebook page “It is with deep sadness to confirm the tragic loss of our Mid Fielder, Mondli Cele, who was involved in a car accident this morning and passed away”.
The SAPS are currently investigating the circumstances around the accident.

The speedy player opened the scoring with a sublime finish against Eric Tinkler’s side at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday, his second in as many matches.
He was expected to continue playing a key role in helping United move from the bottom of the log this season.
