Pretoria – Legal Aid South Africa (Legal Aid SA) has condemned the attack on an advocate who is representing two people accused of kidnapping and killing a three-year-old child in Mpumalanga.
The advocate was assaulted by an angry mob outside a court in Tonga after proceedings on 14 January.
“This act is discouraged and condemned by Legal Aid SA and should not be recurring. We further request that communities understand that legal representatives are engaged to ensure that there is a fair trial and also to promote the rule of law,” Legal Aid SA said in a statement on Thursday.
The mission of Legal Aid SA is to provide accessible, ethical, quality and independent legal services to the poor and vulnerable.
Section 35 of the Constitution states that everyone has the right to legal representation
Legal Aid SA said it received instruction to represent three of the accused in the child kidnapping and murder case.
