A 22-year-old man from Manyameni area at Mthunzini was found guilty of rape after the court heard how he raped three victims in different times in the area as from 2009. He was convicted and sentenced by the Esikhawini Regional Court to a total of 48 years imprisonment for four counts of rape. The victims were between eight and twelve years old when they were raped by their uncle who was living in the same homestead with them.
The accused started raping the first victim in 2009 and always threatened her not to report the matter to anyone. The victim did not report the matter as she was scared that she might be killed by her uncle. The accused continued with his tricks and raped two more victims in the same homestead on different times. The victims broke their silence and reported these incidents to the police in February 2012 and Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit took over investigation that led to the subsequent arrest of the accused. He was traced and arrested at Thongathi area where he was hiding after he heard that the police were looking for him.
KwaZulu Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni is impressed with this arrest and conviction of the accused. He was supposed to protect his niece from criminals but he chose to rape them.
