Cape Town – Lieutenant General Gary Kruser has been appointed deputy national police commissioner.
Making the announcement in Parliament on Thursday, acting police commissioner Khomotso Phahlane said Kruser would start in his new job on Monday.
He had been acting Western Cape provincial commissioner since December.
“Kruser has been wonderful in the role. He deserves it,” Phahlane said.
Kruser was appointed after deputy national police commissioner Lieutenant General Nobubele Mbekela and national police spokesperson Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale were suspended in November.
Phahlane suspended them after they defended suspended national police commissioner Riah Phiyega, who is facing an inquiry into her fitness to hold office.
Last year, the Labour Court ruled that Mbekela’s and Makgale’s suspensions were lawful.
Parliament’s police committee welcomed the new appointments.
